How to Identify Bed bugs on Mattress and How to Get Rid of Them?

Bed bugs are tiny, oval-shaped insects that are brownish in color. Bed bugs on mattress feed on the blood of animals and people, and their flat bodies expand and turn red after each feeding. Bed bugs are remarkably agile, moving swiftly over surfaces despite their inability to fly.

How to Identify Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are oval in form and develop to be approximately 3/16th of an inch long. They are brown and flat prior to eating. Bed bugs grow more crimson in color, bloated, and elongated after eating. Bed bugs have six legs and two antennae. Bed bugs do not have wings and cannot fly.

Adult bed bugs are visible to the naked eye and can be identified visually, particularly in mattress seams and box springs. Bed bug nymphs are more difficult to detect since they are smaller and lighter in color.

Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation

Small reddish-brown fecal stains on beds, furniture, or walls are the easiest way to identify bed bugs. If you find these areas, it might mean you have an infestation. Bite marks on the arms and legs are another symptom of bed bugs. While these bites may be tiny, they become visible if they enlarge and become irritating. These bites might develop two to three days later, allowing the infection to spread. However, without further bed bug evidence, bites alone do not indicate an infestation.

Bed bug infestations can also be recognized by the presence of molted skins, eggs, empty eggshells, or the bugs themselves. All of these objects are tiny, but they are all visible to the naked eye. Bed bugs on mattress molt skins and eggshells both appear light white after molting or emerging from the eggshell.

Bed Bugs on Mattress Treatment

Check Your Mattress

It is possible to get rid of bed bugs on mattress. However, if the mattress has any tears or holes, it may be unrepairable, and purchasing a new mattress may be the best option.

Scrub Mattress Seams with the Use of a Stiff Brush

Eggs may be hidden in the mattress seams, so use a hard gritty brush to clean them. Wear rubber gloves and scrub every inch of the mattress.

Vacuum your bed and the Surrounding Area

Vacuum the mattress, base, beneath the bed, headboard, and entire bedroom. Remove the vacuum bag and store it outdoors until you’ve had a chance to disinfect it.

Using a zippered cover, encase the mattress and box springs.

After treatment, you may wrap the mattress and box spring in zippered coverings to keep any stray bugs out. Keep the coverings on the mattress and base for at least a year.

Use a Steamer

If you are hesitant about using pesticides, a steamer might be used to treat a bed bug infestation. A steamer will destroy germs, bugs, and bacteria while also assisting in the removal of stains.

Call professional

If you have a very bad infestation, you might consider hiring a bug exterminator. A professional will have all of the necessary tools and equipment for the job. All you have to do is make a phone call and leave the rest to them. If you’ve tried to tackle the bed bug infestation on your own but they’ve returned, a professional will have stronger techniques of permanently eliminating the pests.
